Carbon spring steel is held in a wide range of sizes. Detailed below are our most common specifications. Carbon steel strip and spring steel sheet is available most commonly in the hardened and tempered condition, though certain sizes are available in the annealed condition. Round and flat bar is stocked in the as rolled condition. Most spring steel specifications are held to British Standard steel specifications including BS1449 & BS970.
Alloy steel is steel alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts of between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steels are broken down into two groups: low alloy steels and high alloy steels. The difference between the two is somewhat arbitrary: Smith and Hashemi define the difference at 4.0%, while Degarmo, et al., define it at 8.0 %.[1][2] Most commonly, the phrase "alloy steel" refers to "low alloy" steels.
1.2842 is a quality non-distorting cold work Tool Steel. It is characterised by giving high surface hardness after tempering. 1.2842 offers good dimensional stability in hardening and good machinability. Conforms to Werkstoff Number 1.2842 and DIN specification 90MnCrV8. |

Forging:
Heat 1.2842 slowly and uniformly to 1000°C. Forge within a range of 1050/850°C reheating if necessary. Cool slowly (preferably in a furnace) to avoid setting up stresses.
Annealing:
Heat uniformly to 720°C, equalise, then furnace cool. (Hardness about 229 Brinell). Fully machined tools in grade 1.2842 should be packed during annealing.
Hardening:
Heat the 1.2842 uniformly to 790/820°C until heated through. (If possible pre-heat at 300/500°C). Allow 30 minutes per 25 millimetre of ruling section and quench immediately in oil.
Martempering:
Martempering of 1.2842 is an alternative hardening procedure which may be used when suitable salt bath equipment is available.
Tempering:
Heat the 1.2842 uniformly and thoroughly at the selected tempering temperatures and hold for at least one hour per inch of total thickness.
