Carbon spring steel is held in a wide range of sizes. Detailed below are our most common specifications. Carbon steel strip and spring steel sheet is available most commonly in the hardened and tempered condition, though certain sizes are available in the annealed condition. Round and flat bar is stocked in the as rolled condition. Most spring steel specifications are held to British Standard steel specifications including BS1449 & BS970.
Alloy steel is steel alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts of between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steels are broken down into two groups: low alloy steels and high alloy steels. The difference between the two is somewhat arbitrary: Smith and Hashemi define the difference at 4.0%, while Degarmo, et al., define it at 8.0 %.[1][2] Most commonly, the phrase "alloy steel" refers to "low alloy" steels.

Forging:
The forging temperature for 1.3343 high speed steel is 1050° /1150°C. Do not charge direct into the high temperature part of the furnace. Pre-heat slowly to 850°/900. The heat should then be increased more quickly to the forging temperature. If, during the forging, the temperature of the 1.3343 material drops below 880/900°C, re heating will be necessary. Cool very slowly after forging.
Annealing:
Annealed at 850°C. Soak thoroughly at this temperature and furnace cool.
Hardening:
Pre heat slowly to 840°C/860°C and thoroughly soak. Continue heating to the final hardening temperature of 1230/1250°C and allow the 1.3343 component to be heated through. Quench in oil or cool in air. Great care must be take not to allow the 1.3343 tools to remain too long at the hardening temperature.
Tempering:
Heat uniformly and thoroughly at the selected tempering temperature and hold for at least two hours (one hour per inch of total thickness). Double tempering of 1.3343 high speed steel is essential with intermediate cooling to room temperature between tempers.
