Carbon spring steel is held in a wide range of sizes. Detailed below are our most common specifications. Carbon steel strip and spring steel sheet is available most commonly in the hardened and tempered condition, though certain sizes are available in the annealed condition. Round and flat bar is stocked in the as rolled condition. Most spring steel specifications are held to British Standard steel specifications including BS1449 & BS970.
Alloy steel is steel alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts of between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steels are broken down into two groups: low alloy steels and high alloy steels. The difference between the two is somewhat arbitrary: Smith and Hashemi define the difference at 4.0%, while Degarmo, et al., define it at 8.0 %.[1][2] Most commonly, the phrase "alloy steel" refers to "low alloy" steels.
826M40, 826M40W, 826M40V
826M40 is a 2.5% nickel chromium molybdenum high tensile steel. 826M40 is usually supplied hardened and tempered to either 'V' or 'W' condition. 826M40 is suitable for applications which require higher tensile and yield strenght that 817M40 or 826M31 specifications. 826M40 round bar is available from stock. When required 826M40 can be induction or flame hardened. 826M40 is also suitable for nitriding. |

Mechanical Properties 826M40
Forging
Heat the 826M40 to 1150 to 1200°C and hold at temperature until throughly soaked and suitable to forge. Do not forge below 850°C.
Heat Treatment
To harden 826M40 first heat the component to 820 to 850°C and hold at temperature until throughly soaked. Quench the 826M40 component in oil, water or polymer as required. 826M40 can be flame or induction hardened to achieve a high surface hardness.
Tempering
Heat the 826M40 component to the required tempering temperature (450 to 660°C), thoroughly soak for 1 hour per 25mm thickness of section, cool in air.
Nitriding
826M40 can be nitrided to give a surface hardness of up to 60HRc. Heat to 500 to 530°C and hold for sufficient time to develop the case depth required, no quenching is required.
Stress Relieving
Heat the 826M40 component to 640 to 660°C and hold until temperature is uniform through the section. Soak the 826M40 component for 1 hour per 25mm thickness of section and cool in air.
